Jiaxuan Shen
Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China |
Member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS)
Professor and former director of Institute of Linguistics, CASS
Chairman, Linguistic Society of China
Professor Shen was born on March 7, 1946, in Shanghai. He graduated in 1982 from the Department of Linguistics, Graduate School of CASS, and since then has been working in the Institute of Linguistics, CASS. He is Editor-in-chief of the two most authoritative journals of linguistics in China, Zhongguo Yuwen (Chinese Language Studies) and Dangdai Yuyanxue (Contemporary Linguistics).
Although Professor Shen is one of those who first introduced the generative-transformational grammar to his Chinese colleagues in the 1980s, his research mainly lies in the field of functional linguistics in a broad sense, focusing on studying Chinese grammar both synchronically and diachronically from pragmatic, cognitive, and typological perspectives and the theory of grammaticalization. His main publications include Asymmetry and Markedness Theory (1989, The Commercial Press) and Cognition and Chinese Grammar (2006, The Commercial Press), the latter a collection of papers in Cognitive Linguistics. His recent interest is Chinese-English contrastive study about some basic categories like nouns and verbs and some important concepts like existence and possession. |
